Honest, hard-working folk, each one

Originally settled in the mid-1800s, Thorne Centre was founded by German immigrants seeking new opportunities in the New World. Their cultural roots ran deep — from traditional farming practices to architecture, language, and customs — shaping the identity of the area for generations.
The village was renamed “Ladysmith” around the time of the Second Boer War, in honor of the British victory in South Africa, but the German heritage remained at its heart. Even today, traces of the early settlers’ legacy can be seen in family names, local traditions, and the community spirit that still binds residents together.
